Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Palombaro Lungo
Begin at Belvedere Luigi Guerricchio on Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The first view of Sasso Barisano reveals layers of houses, terraces and steps. Before entering the lanes, visit Palombaro Lungo beneath the square. Walkways cross a huge rock-cut cistern, showing how collecting water sustained life in the Sassi. Check visiting slots and tickets before going.

Sasso Barisano: workshops and memories
Descend towards Via Fiorentini, past courtyards, arches and workshops. The Museo Laboratorio della Civiltà Contadina introduces the tools and trades of daily life, bringing meaning to the surroundings. Nearby, Sassi in Miniatura offers a miniature model of the district. Continue to San Pietro Barisano, one of the city’s large rock churches: behind its built façade lie rooms carved from the rock.

Civita, the Cathedral and Casa Noha
Climb to Civita, the high centre between the two Sassi. On Piazza Duomo, the Cathedral combines a Romanesque façade with richly decorated interiors; the square overlooks Sasso Barisano. Nearby Casa Noha tells Matera’s history through a multimedia presentation, from life in the caves to twentieth-century hardship and the city’s revival. Choose this visit to understand the Sassi beyond their photogenic views.

Sasso Caveoso and its rock churches
Descend towards Via Madonna delle Virtù and follow the edge of the Sassi, facing the Gravina ravine and the Murgia. Reach Piazza San Pietro Caveoso and its church, then climb to the rocky outcrop of Santa Maria de Idris for frescoed rock-cut interiors and a striking setting. Nearby Santa Lucia alle Malve adds another perspective on the rock churches. Visit one or both according to your time, and check whether a combined ticket is available.

The cave house at Vico Solitario
In Sasso Caveoso, enter the cave house at Vico Solitario. Recreated furnishings show how a family shared limited space with animals, domestic work and daily necessities. The visit helps explain the conditions that led to residents moving into new neighbourhoods after the Second World War. Here the landscape becomes a story of everyday lives.

Piazzetta Pascoli and the upper streets
Climb to Piazzetta Pascoli beside Palazzo Lanfranchi for a view of Sasso Caveoso and Idris. Follow Via Ridola past the Church of Purgatory, with its unusual portal, to Piazza San Francesco d’Assisi. Viewpoints, façades and broader streets lead you back towards Piazza Vittorio Veneto. If exhibitions or art installations catch your eye, check the current programme.

When the Sassi light up
If you stay into the evening, pause for dinner and watch the landscape change as the lights come on. Choose a viewpoint you passed earlier for a final look, without repeating the visits. For souvenirs, seek out crunchy peperoni cruschi and handmade wooden bread stamps, once used to identify loaves in communal ovens. Browse the small workshops in the Sassi.

An optional trip into the Murgia
Belvedere di Murgia Timone looks back at the Sassi across the Gravina. This is a separate excursion requiring time to reach the area and return. Trail 406 from Porta Pistola descends to the suspension footbridge and climbs to the plateau, with uneven ground and elevation changes. Ask the Park about opening, conditions and access arrangements; wear hiking shoes and carry water. Consider a guide for the park’s rock churches, and return before dark when walking the trails.

Outside town: the Crypt of Original Sin
In the countryside outside Matera, the Cripta del Peccato Originale contains frescoes that earned it the nickname “Sistine Chapel of rock art”. Treat it as an additional visit with a separate transfer, rather than a stop on the city walk. Booking is compulsory: reserve a slot on the official website and check directions.

BEFORE YOU GO
Before leaving Bari
A full day gives time for both Sassi and selected interiors; two days allow more museums and the Murgia. Arrange the journey from Oceanomare separately from the walking route. If driving, check restricted traffic zones and parking and leave the car outside restricted areas. Expect steps and uneven paving: bring comfortable shoes, water and sun protection. A guided walk helps with orientation and history. Check operators for hours, prices and bookings, and reserve restaurants for a specific evening.
