The visitor centre and museum
Begin around Villaggio Umbra, at the visitor centre and Natural History Museum. Ask about trails and discover the area’s plants, animals and history. The reconstructed woodcutter’s house is an interesting stop for children too. Check opening times and available activities before travelling.

A break at Laghetto d’Umbra
Walk to Laghetto d’Umbra for green reflections and trees beside the water. This pleasant family stop pairs well with a short route in the central forest area. Watch animals without feeding them and stay on permitted paths.

Walking among beeches and orchids
Choose a marked trail to suit your time and fitness: Laghetto d’Umbra–Falascone is one of the Park’s routes. Listen to the forest as you walk; in spring you may see wild orchids, which should never be picked. The photographed map is illustrative: use an up-to-date map and signs on site.

The forest by mountain bike
Ask around the museum about bike rental and guided outings. Use permitted routes suited to your ability, wear a helmet and give walkers space. Confirm bikes, routes and services with local operators. For a longer outing, a local guide can help you understand the landscape.

With more time: Scaranappe
The Scaranappe cutino is a small rain-fed pond, separate from Laghetto d’Umbra. Paglizzi–Scaranappe is an additional excursion: check its duration, condition and starting point before adding it to your day. You do not need to cover every trail to enjoy the forest.

FORESTA UMBRA
A woodland picnic
Take water and a packed lunch for a break in designated picnic areas. Check seasonal opening of cafés and food services. Carry your rubbish away, do not light fires and leave wildlife undisturbed.
BEFORE YOU GO
Getting there and what to bring
Plan a car outing from Bari, allowing time for both journeys; the transfer is separate from the walk. Set your destination to Villaggio Umbra or the visitor centre and check roads, parking and weather. For organised tours, confirm whether transport is included. Bring grippy shoes, a light jacket, water, insect repellent and an offline map. Choose a realistic route and return before dark. Vieste, Peschici and Vico del Gargano can complement a longer stay, rather than fitting everything into one day.
