Outside: look for the number eight
Before entering, notice the octagonal plan and eight towers, themselves octagonal. The monumental portal and pale stone give the building a solemn yet refined character. Look across the Murgia landscape too: its setting helps explain the castle’s presence.

The courtyard, rooms and light
The courtyard repeats the octagonal form, with eight rooms arranged on each floor. Look at vaults, windows, capitals and the light passing through the spaces. The interiors are plainer today than they once were; architecture and proportions are the main focus.

The history behind the “mysteries”
The regular design has inspired stories about numbers, astronomy and hidden meanings. These interpretations should be distinguished from documented facts. Castel del Monte belongs to Frederick II’s castle world, where defence, residence and royal display could coexist. Some aspects of its original purpose remain uncertain.
